Student OrganizationsChemical Engineering students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, including honorary, professional and technical societies at the department, college and university levels. The department encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities to enhance their educational experience, foster professional networks and develop communication and social skills. Being an officer and serving on committees also develops leadership skills. See the Student Activities Center and Student Organization Handbook for more than 450 registered student organizations. AIChE Professional Student OrganizationBesides doing their course work, students can develop their professionalism by participating in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers student chapter which provides contact with professional engineers as well as other engineering students. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, AIChE, is the national professional society for chemical engineers and plays a significant role in the profession. A very active student chapter of AIChE operates at the University of Florida. Students may join at special rates and enjoy most of the rights and privileges of full membership in the national AIChE. The chapter sponsors weekly meetings, and also participates in various Department and University activities. The current faculty advisor to the AIChE student chapter is Dr. Spyros Svoronos. GRACE (Graduate Student Association of Chemical Engineers)Any graduate student in Chemical Engineering is officially a
GRACE member. The purpose
of this organization is to stimulate intellectual growth and to promote
fellowship among graduate students in the Chemical Engineering Department. Tau Beta Pi is a national honor society for engineers and a student chapter exists at the University of Florida. Membership is on a selective basis and requires exemplary character. Invitations are issued to the to eighth of the Junior Class and to the top fifth of the Senior Class.
