Curriculum Enhancements Up

NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The following information is from the website: http://www.ncees.org/exams/fundamentals/

Why take a Fundamentals (FE) exam?

You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination to pursue a professional license. Although chemical engineers are not required to take the FE exam, it may be an asset to certain students. If you plan to work in environmental consulting, own your own company, or need a boost because of a low GPA, it may be a good idea for you to take the exam. Speak to an advisor to find out if this exam is right for you.

What material is covered in the exams?

The FE exam covers subject matter taught in an ABET accredited baccalaureate engineering program. The exam is multiple choice. It appropriately covers a comprehensive range of subjects in engineering. You can find detailed exam content information at:  http://www.ncees.org/exams/fundamentals/fe_exam_specs.pdf

You can find reference books and example exam questions at: http://www.ncees.org/exams/study_materials/

After I pass a Fundamentals exam, what's next?

Examinees must earn a scaled score of 70 or higher to pass the FE exam. Passing a Fundamentals exam is the first step toward licensure. To complete the process you must:

  • Obtain at least 4 years of experience deemed acceptable by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.
  • Pass the Principles and Practice exam (PE). Both exams are required for professional licensure. http://www.ncees.org/licensure/

Registering for the FE Exam

Exams are offered twice a year in April and October: http://www.ncees.org/exams/schedules/

Deadline to register is 6 months prior to the exam

There are two required exam payments.
