Professional ProgramThe Chemical Engineering Department offers a professional program leading to the bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering (BSChE ). The first two years (first 60 credit hours completed) of this program are considered to be pre-professional and permit unrestricted course enrollment for any student who has satisfied course prerequisites. The remaining two or more years are considered to constitute the professional program and enrollment is restricted to those students who have been admitted to the professional program. Engineering Pre-Professional Course RequirementsCompletion of appropriate technical foundation course work is required by all students who plan to pursue degree programs in the College of Engineering. This is where students develop the preparatory science, analytical, and general engineering skills and also satisfy the general education categories of mathematics and physical/biological science. Students electing to major in Chemical Engineering must successfully complete the minimum pre-professional program requirements that are detailed below.
All of the above courses, including laboratory courses, are required for entry into the professional program. However, continuation in the professional program will be based on the GPA for the above list of lecture courses marked with an asterisk*. Note 1: For entry into Calculus 1, a student should follow the Mathematics Department placement test guidelines (See the UF Undergraduate Catalog for details). Students not meeting the test scores should consider taking MAC 1141 (Pre-calculus) or other courses to improve their skills. Note 2: To be eligible for placement in the chemistry course sequence, a student must meet the Chemistry Department placement test score requirements (See the UF Undergraduate Catalog for details). Pre-Professional GPA RequirementsThe College of Engineering requires a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better on all courses attempted as calculated by the University of Florida. The Chemical Engineering Department requires that a GPA of 2.5 or better be achieved in each of the technical areas (calculus, chemistry, physics) for continuation in the professional program. All GPA scores are based on all attempts. Professional Program ContinuationEvaluation of performance for continuation in the BSChE professional program will be made after the completion of 60 credit hours. In progress checks while completing the first 60 credit hours will be made through universal tracking. In general, potential transfer students (and students who after completing 60 credit hours wish to change their major to chemical engineering) must satisfy the pre-professional program requirements prior to acceptance into the Chemical Engineering Department. Requests for conditional one-semester admission to complete pre-professional course requirements will be considered provided the student has completed (or is currently taking) at least 6 of the 8 required pre-professional courses. It should be understood that minimum requirements are given and that admission is a selective process. Satisfaction of minimum requirements does not automatically guarantee admission to the professional program. Initial Professional Course RequirementsEach student must complete each of the beginning BSChE professional courses (ECH 3023, ECH3101, ECH 3203, ECH3223, ECH3264, and COT 3502) with a letter grade of C or higher within two enrollments (including W grades). With the exception of ECH3023 and COT3502, none of the required BSChE degree ECH 3000 and 4000 level courses may be taken before acceptance into the professional program. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
