Organic Chemistry Courses

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum organic chemistry requirement is satisfied by completion of the two semester CHM 2210-2211-2211L sequence for catalog years prior to 2002-2003.

Beginning with catalog year 2002-2003, the Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum organic chemistry requirement is the one semester organic chemistry course CHM 3217. The CHM 2210-2211 sequence can be substituted for CHM 3217.

For catalog year 2001-2002,  the one semester organic chemistry course CHM 3217 plus Analytical Chemistry CHM 3120 and CHM 3120L (a total of 8 credit hours) can substitute for the two semester CHM 2210-2211-2211L organic sequence (8 credit hours) .

Course Comments

CHM 2210

Organic Chemistry. The first semester of the two-semester  (CHM 2210-2211) organic chemistry sequence

CHM 2211

Organic Chemistry. The second semester of the two-semester (CHM 2210-2211) organic chemistry sequence.

Students who have one semester of college organic chemistry  (CHM 2210) credit from a community college or state university in Florida can register for CHM 2211 but these students should talk with a chemistry department advisor (See Transfer Students below).

CHM 3217

One Semester Organic Chemistry. The one semester organic chemistry course.

Laboratory Requirements

The BSChE curricula for catalog years 2000-2001 and earlier require 2 credit hours of organic chemistry laboratory, CHM 2211L. Catalog year 2001 requires 2 credit hours of organic chemistry laboratory, CHM 2211L, or the completion of the analytical chemistry sequence CHM 3210 and CHM 3210L.

Catalog years 2002-2003 and later do not require an organic chemistry laboratory.  However, CHM 2211L is recommended for those students planning to go into a bio-life sciences field and is often a requirement for entering medical related professional fields.

You don't have to take the laboratory concurrently with the second semester of the organic chemistry sequence.  A number of students opt to take the laboratory after they have completed the CHM 2210-CHM 2211 or CHM 3217 lecture courses.

Transfer Students

You are strongly advised to complete all of the components of a multi-term sequence such as the organic sequence at the same institution. The two  semesters of organic chemistry are integral parts of one organic chemistry course. And the sequencing of topics within these semesters is subject to considerable variation from school to school.  Frequently, the parts from different schools don't fit together well.
