Chemistry Courses

A major component of the chemical engineering undergraduate degree curriculum is chemistry and multiple options are available for meeting the BSChE chemistry requirements.  The upcoming changes in the BSChE curriculum chemistry requirements and few words of guidance in taking chemistry courses are noted below.

General Chemistry

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum general chemistry is the two semester general chemistry sequence CHM 2045-2046. See General Chemistry for several alternate ways to satisfy the general chemistry requirement of the BSChE degree program.

Analytical Chemistry

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curricula for catalog years 2002-2003 and later requires CHM 3120 Analytical Chemistry and its laboratory CHM 3120L. Catalog years prior to 2002-2003 do not require analytical chemistry (However, students have been encouraged to take CHM 3120 and CHM 3120L as technical elective courses that can be applied towards a minor in chemistry).

Organic Chemistry

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum for catalog years prior to 2002-2003 requires the two semester CHM 2210-2211-2211L sequence to meet the organic chemistry requirement.  Under the 2001-2002 catalog, students will be allowed to take the one semester organic chemistry course CHM 3217 to satisfy the organic chemistry requirement provided they also take CHM 3120 Analytical Chemistry and its laboratory CHM 3120L. See Organic Chemistry for more instructions and options for satisfying the organic chemistry requirement.

Physical Chemistry

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum physical chemistry requirement is the first semester physical chemistry course CHM 4411.  For catalog years before 2002-2003, ECH 3023 Introduction to Chemical Engineering requires CHM 4411 as a corequisite. Both CHM 4411 and ECH 3023 include a large component of thermodynamics.  CHM 4411 presents the topics from a more idealized point of view.  ECH 3023 introduces thermodynamics in the context of more complex process oriented applications. Hence, students have been advised to complete CHM 4411 before taking ECH 3023.

For catalog years 2002-2003 and later, ECH 3101 Process Thermodynamics requires CHM 4411 as a prerequisite. Note also that for catalog years after 2001-2002 ECH 3023 has a new title (Material and Energy Balances) and does not require CHM 4411 as a prerequisite or corequisite.

Advanced Chemistry Option

The Chemical Engineering BSChE curriculum requires an advanced chemistry elective beyond the requirements noted above.  For catalog years prior to 2001-2002, CHM 4412 is required. Catalog years 2001-2002 and later require an  Advanced Chemistry Option.
