Graduate Studies

If a student desires to follow a career in design, development, or research, additional formal education at the graduate level may be desirable. Chemical engineers with master's or doctor's degrees constitute a large percentage of those employed in research and development work. Well-qualified students are encouraged to enter a graduate program.

M.S. Credit Options

The Department of Chemical Engineering urges qualified undergraduates to attend graduate school and provides two ways for an undergraduate to get a head start on the graduate degree requirements.

Combined BS/MS

The first way is to open to those students who complete both the bachelor and master's degrees in chemical engineering at University of Florida. Subject to Department approval, such students may use up to twelve credit hours of graduate level chemical engineering course work for both degrees. See Combined BS/MS Program for qualification requirements.

Take Excess Hours

The second way is to take hours in excess of the hours required for undergraduate degree. These hours might be at the graduate level or the senior level. A 2.7 cumulative GPA is required if an undergraduate wishes to register for a graduate level course. The excess hours so accumulated can be brought forward for the graduate degree by filling out the appropriate form which is obtainable in the University of Florida Graduate Office.

PhD Degree Programs

The University of Florida has an outstanding graduate program leading to the PhD. However, the faculty believes that it is in the best interest of a University of Florida graduates to seek admission to another university to expand their exposure to the wide range and diversity of professional ideas and concepts available in doing so. Discuss your advanced education interests with your faculty counselor who can provide insights as to graduate degree programs that will best suit your career objectives.
