NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program ( NSF-GRFP)

Three-year fellowships. US citizens or permanent residents. College seniors and first-year graduate students may apply. Stipend of $ 20,500 plus cost-of-education allowance up to $10,500, plus $1,000 International Research Travel Allowance. Two types of programs:

  • NSF Graduate Fellowships
  • Minority Graduate Fellowships (including Women in Engineering)

Fannie and John Hertz Foundation.

Graduate Fellowships in the Applied Physical Sciences. Applicants must be applying or be presently enrolled in a PhD. Program, and be Citizens of permanent Residents of the US.

Offers $25,000 personal stipend plus full tuition. Renewable up to 5 years.

The Whitaker Foundation - Graduate Fellowships in Biomedical Engineering

College seniors or first-year graduate students may apply. PhD goal only.

Offers $19,500 personal stipend plus full tuition..

Deadline: typically December 10

The DOD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships

College seniors or first-year graduate students may apply. PhD goal only.

Offers $33,000 personal stipend plus full tuition. Recipients do not incur any military or other service obligation. The program is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), phone number (202) 331-3516.

Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities

Minority applicants, US citizens or Permanent Residents

Administered by the National Research Council, phone (202) 334-2872. Programs:

  • Predoctoral Fellowships for Minorities ($16,000, Typical deadline November 19)
  • Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities ($24,000, Typical deadline December 3)
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities ($35,000, Typical deadline Jan. 7)

AAUW Educational Foundation Fellowships Program.

Supported by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation.

Support for MS and Doctoral programs in Engineering through various fellowship programs. Program addresses the under-representation of women in various fields. For information call (319) 337-1716 x 159 or (202)728-7632.

Paul And Daisy Soros Fellowship For New Americans.

Seniors, first-year, and second-year graduate students who fit one of the following criteria: (1) Have a green card, (2) Be a naturalized citizen, (3) Be a child of two Naturalized parents.
