Upper-Division Grade-Point Average (UD GPA)

The College of Engineering evaluates a student's performance based on his or her upper-division GPA. This average is calculated from courses taken at the University of Florida starting the semester after a student has earned a total of 60 credits. Grades for transfer courses do not count.

Grade points are assigned as follows:

  • 4.0 points for an A
  • 3.5 points for a B+
  • 3.0 points for a B
  • 2.5 points for a C+
  • 2.0 points for a C
  • l.5 points for a D+
  • 1.0 points for a D
  • 0.0 points for an E, I, WF, and U

Consult the UF Undergraduate Catalog for explanations of H, N, NG, I, WF, and U. The number of grade points earned from completing a course can be determined by multiplying the course hours by the number corresponding to the grade earned.

A student's UD GPA can be determined by totaling the grade points earned in the semesters attended after completing 60 hours, and dividing these grade points by the total semester hours for this time period. The GPA calculation is more difficult when course work is repeated. For details, see the section on "Repeat Course Work" in the Undergraduate Catalog .

A student with less than a 2.0 UD GPA has a UD grade-point deficit. This deficit is the number of additional grade points needed for a 2.0 UD average. For example, a student with 90 grade points for 50 hours attempted has a 1.8 GPA and a deficit of 10 grade points.

Graduation GPA Requirements

To graduate with a BSChE degree, a student must have at least a 2.0 University of Florida cumulative GPA,  at least a 2.0 upper-division GPA, and at least a 2.0 GPA in all chemical engineering required courses.

Probation and Suspension

If a student's overall GPA drops below 2.0, the University will place this student on academic probation. If, however, the grade-point deficit is 15 or more, the student will be suspended.

If a student's upper-division GPA (UD GPA) drops below 2.0, he or she is automatically placed on College Academic Probation. This probation is entirely different from that of the University Probation mentioned above. In fact, a student can be on College of Engineering probation, but be in good standing at the University level.

See the Undergraduate Catalog and Probation for details.
