How to Change Your Major

When a student is accepted into the University of Florida, the student must also be accepted into a major department. If the student then wants to change majors, the student must be accepted into the new major.

To Change Your Major To Chemical Engineering

To begin your change of major to Chemical Engineering, you should meet with the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Coordinator (219 Chemical Engineering, Call 392-0852 for an appointment or to ask questions) for an interview and discussion of your qualifications and goals.

The Change of Major Process

To be considered for acceptance to the Chemical Engineering program, you must submit a request for change of major to Chemical Engineering. The change of major request form identifies your current major and authorizes the Chemical Engineering Department to review your student file in your current (and previous) major department(s).

Your transcript will be assessed to determine your status with regard to the BSChE degree program. The specific requirements for changing majors depends on the number credit hours that you have completed and the majors involved.

Lower Division (less than 60 credit hours completed)

A student must have a UF GPA of at least 2.0 and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better in the engineering pre-professional tracking courses to be eligible for changing majors to Chemical Engineering.

Upper Division (60 or more credit hours completed)

Upper division students must have a UF GPA of at least 2.0 and have satisfactorily completed the required engineering technical foundation courses in calculus, differential equations, chemistry and physics with calculus to change majors to Chemical Engineering.  If these conditions have not been met, additional courses must be taken to meet these requirements before being accepted into the BSChE program.

Although all credits earned and accepted by the University of Florida will be on your transcript, some may not be applicable towards satisfying the BSChE degree requirements.

After Being Accepted

If you are accepted into the Chemical Engineering Department, a copy of your request for change of major and a copy of the letter of your acceptance to the Chemical Engineering program will be sent to your previous department.  A request will also be made that your academic files be sent to the Chemical Engineering Academic Advisement Office and that requirement changes be removed.

Once admitted to the Chemical Engineering degree program,  you will confer with the Undergraduate Coordinator to develop an appropriate course registration plan in the Chemical Engineering Department.  After developing your course schedule plan and having an advisement meeting, your registration hold will be lifted and you can register for courses in your Chemical Engineering degree program at the times provided by the University of Florida Registrar.

If you are denied admission to the Chemical Engineering Degree program, there is an appeal process. Appeal forms are available from the Chemical Engineering Academic Advisement Office.

To Change To Another Major

Go to the Dean's office of your proposed new major college and ask what procedures are to be followed. After you are accepted into another department, go to your new department for advisement and register for courses in your new degree plan. Please also discuss the reasons for changing majors with the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Coordinator.

If you have not been accepted into another degree program by the time registration rolls around, you must be advised by your assigned chemical engineering faculty counselor. Do not skip advisement on the grounds that you have a change of major in the works.
